Μόνιμη έκθεση με θέμα το έργο του αρχιτέκτονα του Ωδείου Αθηνών

Το Goethe-Institut Athen παρουσιάζει σε συνεργασία με τα Αρχεία Νεοελληνικής Αρχιτεκτονικής του Μουσείου Μπενάκη και το Ωδείο Αθηνών τη νέα μόνιμη έκθεση «Από το κτήριο στην κοινότητα: Ο Ιωάννης Δεσποτόπουλος και το Bauhaus». 

H ΕΚΘΕΣΗ:

Ο Ιωάννης Δεσποτόπουλος (1903 – 1992) είναι ο μοναδικός Έλληνας αρχιτέκτονας που έζησε για δύο χρόνια στη Βαϊμάρη, την εποχή που λειτουργούσε εκεί η Σχολή του Bauhaus, και ήρθε σε άμεση επαφή με τις αρχές, τη διδασκαλία και τους ανθρώπους της διάσημης αυτής σχολής. 

Η εμπειρία του Bauhaus και γενικότερα του κλίματος της Δημοκρατίας της Βαϊμάρης υπήρξε καταλυτική για το μετέπειτα έργο του. Κατανόησε το Bauhaus όχι ως ένα «στυλ», αλλά ως έναν ευρύτερο τρόπο σκέψης και δημιουργίας, τον οποίο εφάρμοσε στα σχέδιά του για το Πνευματικό Κέντρο της Αθήνας (1959) και το κτήριο του Ωδείου Αθηνών, το μόνο κτίσμα που υλοποιήθηκε από την εκτενή εκείνη μελέτη.  

Με αφορμή την ανακαίνιση των χώρων του Ωδείου Αθηνών, η έκθεση στεγάστηκε στον 1ο όροφο και έλαβε μόνιμο χαρακτήρα. Επικεντρώνεται στην ιστορία του σημαντικού αυτού κτηρίου. Επίσης, προσφέρει μια περιήγηση στις διάφορες πτυχές της σταδιοδρομίας του αρχιτέκτονα, στο πλαίσιο του ευρωπαϊκού μοντερνισμού του 20ού αιώνα, και φωτίζει την περίοδο κατά την οποία σχεδιάστηκε και ανεγέρθηκε το Ωδείο Αθηνών.

Παράλληλα, η έκθεση λειτουργεί ως προτροπή προς τους επισκέπτες και τις επισκέπτριες να συνεχίσουν την περιήγησή τους στους υπόλοιπους χώρους του κτηρίου, με την επιδίωξη να γίνει κατανοητή η πρόθεση του αρχιτέκτονα να λειτουργήσει το κτήριο ως μέσο σύστασης μιας κοινότητας, η οποία θα μοιράζεται δημιουργικά το ενδιαφέρον της για τη μουσική και τις τέχνες.

Ο ΕΠΙΜΕΛΗΤΗΣ

Ο Λουκάς Μπαρτατίλας (www.loukasbartatilas.com ) γεννήθηκε το 1981 στην Αθήνα και ζει στο Βερολίνο. Είναι αρχιτέκτονας (Παν/μιο Θεσσαλίας) με μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στην “Τέχνη στο Δημόσιο Χώρο και τις νέες καλλιτεχνικές στρατηγικές” (ΜFA, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar). 

Αυτή την περίοδο πραγματοποιεί την διδακτορική του διατριβή στο Τμήμα Ιστορίας και Θεωρίας της Αρχιτεκτονικής στο Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Η έρευνα του εστιάζει στην επίδραση του Bauhaus στη μοντέρνα αρχιτεκτονική στην Ελλάδα μέσα από το έργο του αρχιτέκτονα Ιωάννη Δεσποτόπουλου. 

* Η έκθεση παρουσιάστηκε για πρώτη φορά, εμπλουτισμένη με πρωτότυπο αρχειακό υλικό, τον Οκτώβριο και τον Νοέμβριο του 2019, στον χώρο του υπογείου του Ωδείου Αθηνών. Αποτελούσε μέρος των εκδηλώσεων που έλαβαν χώρα το 2019 ανά την Ευρώπη με αφορμή τη συμπλήρωση των 100 χρόνων από την ίδρυση της Σχολής του Bauhaus, παρουσιάζοντας μια πτυχή των σχέσεων της φημισμένης σχολής με την Ελλάδα, μέσα από το έργο του αρχιτέκτονα Ιωάννη Δεσποτόπουλου.  

Η έκθεση θα εγκαινιαστεί τη Δευτέρα, 21 Μαρτίου 2022, στις 6.00 μ.μ., στο Ωδείο Αθηνών.

FROM BUILDING TO COMMUNITY: IOANNIS DESPOTOPOULOS AND THE BAUHAUS

Permanent exhibition on the architect and the building of the Athens Conservatoire

The Goethe-Institut in Athens presents From Building to Community: Ioannis Despotopoulos and the Bauhaus, a newly installed* permanent exhibition organised in collaboration with the Athens Conservatoire and the Modern Greek Architecture Archives of the Benaki Museum. 

THE EXHIBITION

Ioannis Despotopoulos is the only Greek architect to have lived in Weimar in the Bauhaus era. During his two years in the city, he came into direct contact with the principles, teaching, and staff and students of the famous art school. 

His experiences at the Bauhaus and in the overall atmosphere generated by the Weimar Republic had a catalytic effect on his later work. Rather than viewing the Bauhaus as a “style”, he thought of it as a broader way of looking at things and of understanding reality. Moreover, he saw architecture and the profession of the architect as a means of achieving goals that would benefit society. He implemented these ideas in his 1959 design for the Athens Cultural Centre and in the “Odeion” conservatoire, the only building to be realised as part of this project.

To mark the renovation of the “Odeion” building, the exhibition is to be permanently installed on the first floor, where it will focus on the history of this important architectural work. A tour plan will also be offered to showcase various aspects of the architect’s life situated in the context of twentieth-century European modernism and the period in which the Athens Conservatory was designed and built.

At the same time, the exhibition serves as an incentive for visitors to continue their tour of the building, with the goal of highlighting Despotopoulos’s aspiration to have the Conservatoire function not only as the external shell of a music academy but also as the means for creating a community of people who would creatively share their interest in music and art.

The show has been curated by Loukas Bartatilas.

THE CURATOR

Loukas Bartatilas (www.loukasbartatilas.com ) was born in Athens in 1981 and lives in Berlin. He is an architect (University of Thessaly) and holds an MFA in “Public Art and new Artistic Strategies” (Bauhaus-Universität Weimar). 

He is currently doing his doctorate at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. He conducts research on the influence of the Bauhaus on modern Greek architecture trough the work of architect Ioannis Despotopoulos.

* The exhibition was presented for the first time during the months of October and November 2019, accompanied by additional original archival material, in the basement of the Athens Conservatoire. 

The exhibition was part of the events that took place in 2019 throughout Europe to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus School. Presenting the works of architect Ioannis Despotopoulos (Jan Despo) showcased one aspect of the relationship between this renowned educational establishment and Greece.

The official opening takes place in the “Odeion Athinon” building at 6 pm on Monday, 21 March 2022.

The exhibition can be visited during the Odeion’s regular opening hours.
